Moroccan authorities deported two Italian journalists on Sunday after they attempted to illegally enter the city of Laayoune, in what officials described as a “provocative act” that violated the country’s regulations governing foreign visitors.
According to informed Hespress AR sources, journalist Matteo Garavoglia and photographer Giovanni Colmoni tried to sneak into Laayoune from the northern entrance using a private vehicle without securing the required authorization from local authorities.
The incident prompted an intervention by local officials, who emphasized that respecting Morocco’s national sovereignty is a red line that cannot be crossed under any pretext. Authorities stressed that any violations are addressed in strict accordance with the country’s laws.
Sources told Hespress AR that the two journalists allegedly sought to exploit their professional status to promote separatist agendas. They were stopped and subsequently deported by car to the city of Agadir.
The journalists’ attempt to enter Laayoune by land followed earlier failed efforts to access the city through Hassan I Airport, underscoring their persistent disregard for Morocco’s legal procedures concerning visits to the southern provinces.
