Three members of Polisario militia voluntarily surrendered to the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces on Thursday evening in the Oum Dreyga area, southwest of the berm wall.
The individuals, dressed in the Polisario military uniform, crossed from Algerian territory via Mauritania before entering Moroccan soil.
Sources told Hespress that their voluntary surrender is likely driven by the mounting frustration and despair within the Tindouf camps in Algeria, where social conditions have deteriorated and the political horizon appears bleak.
Faced with a stagnant and oppressive reality, many young Sahrawis are reconsidering their long-held positions and, in some cases, seeking individual escapes from the unchanging situation.
Earlier in April, Algerian army forces opened fire on unarmed Sahrawi civilians, triggering an unprecedented wave of public protests and unrest.
At least one person dead and nine others were injured during the attack, triggering mass protests within the camps, with demonstrators condemning both the Algerian military and the continued silence of the Polisario leadership.
Growing frustration toward Algeria’s oppressive actions is now being compounded by disillusionment with Polisario’s perceived subservience and lack of sovereignty.
Protesters have begun openly calling for an end to their prolonged suffering and even expressed support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as a path to peace, in the face of continued hardship and repression.
