Amid mounting speculation in Morocco and Spain over the cargo aboard the Nexo Maersk, which docked Sunday evening at the Port of Tangier Med, the Green Justice Foundation has issued a firm denial of any military components on board, asserting the ship is carrying purely civilian goods.
The UK-based independent organization, known for its work on transparency and accountability in international affairs, said it had concluded a comprehensive investigation.
The probe involved reviewing shipping documents, consulting maritime experts, analyzing tracking data, and contacting port authorities in both Barcelona and Tangier.
The controversy began with claims that the Nexo Maersk, operated by Maersk Line, was transporting F-35 fighter jet parts to Israel. The rumors sparked protests in northern Morocco and in Spanish cities like Barcelona and Bilbao, where civil society groups called for the vessel to be inspected or turned away.
However, the foundation’s findings, based on multiple verified sources, contradicted those claims. A key piece of evidence was an official statement from Maersk dated March 18, 2025, denying any involvement in arms transport and reaffirming the company’s compliance with international regulations.
In addition, a formal inspection conducted at the Port of Barcelona on April 15, requested by activists, did not uncover any military-related cargo. Moroccan port authorities also confirmed the shipment is entirely civilian and in line with both national and international laws.
