Moroccan gendarmerie forces dismantled a clandestine human smuggling network late Friday night in Dar Bouazza, Nouaceur Province, as the group attempted to launch an illegal sea crossing from Oued Merzeg beach.
Acting on intelligence regarding the presence of young individuals from various cities planning to migrate across the Mediterranean in an inflatable boat, Royal Gendarmerie units, in coordination with police forces, conducted a large-scale sweep of the coastal area.
Five suspects were arrested during the operation, while others managed to flee into the adjacent forest. According to local sources, some escapees threw stones at passersby and vehicles under cover of darkness in an apparent effort to distract authorities and shield their companions.
The incident triggered a significant security mobilization, with personnel from both the gendarmerie and local police securing the area. The suspects had crossed into jurisdictions overlapping with the city of Rahma, prompting collaboration between multiple law enforcement agencies.
Auxiliary forces and local administrative officials also joined the effort, encircling the beach and combing the forest in pursuit of the remaining suspects.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to identify the organizers behind the attempted illegal migration and dismantle any broader network facilitating such operations.
