U.S. exempts Morocco from new tariffs on high-sugar imports
Thursday 17 April 2025 - 13:34

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has excluded Morocco from newly implemented tariffs on high-sugar imports, which took effect on Wednesday. The duties apply to products containing more than 65% sugar by dry weight and range between 11.3 and 23.5 cents per kilogram.

Alongside Morocco, countries like Canada, Mexico, Jordan, Singapore, Chile, Australia, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua were also granted exemptions, according to the Federal Register.

The tariffs target imported goods such as candies, sweetened beverages, cocoa-based products, and certain processed foods that exceed the sugar threshold. The measure is based on the Uruguay Round Agreements Act and the WTO’s Agreement on Agriculture, which allow safeguard actions once import volumes surpass specific thresholds.

The USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service determined that the volume trigger for these high-sugar imports had been reached, prompting the new duties—though Morocco and a few select nations remain unaffected.
