The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported its efforts in evacuating five groups of Moroccans, including their families, stranded in Gaza following the Israeli military invasion.
In total, 369 individuals were successfully evacuated. However, the ministry clarified that, due to the intensification of Israeli military operations, the closure of border crossings, and the overall security situation, evacuation efforts were suspended.
Like many other countries, Morocco had to halt operations until conditions allowed for their resumption.
This update was issued in response to a request from the Progress and Socialism parliamentary group, which had urged the ministry to assist in evacuating a Moroccan citizen, Dania Ait Zakour, and her family from Gaza.
According to the ministry, Zakour’s name had been included on the fifth list of Moroccans wishing to leave the region, with the aim to depart on April 8, 2024, but she failed to appear at the Rafah crossing without providing prior notice to the Moroccan mission in Ramallah, thereby preventing her evacuation.
The ministry assured that the crisis cell, tasked with monitoring the situation of Moroccans stranded in Gaza, continues to work closely with diplomatic missions and foreign authorities. Efforts are ongoing to facilitate the safe departure of Moroccan citizens when the security conditions allow.
The Moroccan Embassy in Ramallah reached out to Zakour to inquire about her absence and to request necessary documentation for her husband and newborn child, so that arrangements for their repatriation could be made once evacuation operations resume.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized its ongoing commitment to support the Moroccan community in Gaza and other areas enduring challenging circumstances, pledging continued assistance until the evacuation process can be fully restored.
