A high-level security operation carried out by the Judicial Police Unit in the city of Essaouira successfully thwarted in the early hours of Tuesday morning an attempt to smuggle nearly 18 tons of narcotics via international maritime routes.
The operation was based on intelligence provided by the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST).

According to a statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), received by Hespress, the operation took place off the coast of the Sidi Ishaq area, located on the Atlantic coast between Safi and Essaouira.
Authorities intercepted a freight truck loaded with 17 tons and 740 kilograms of hashish, which was being prepared for transfer onto two inflatable boats that were seized at the scene.
Subsequent searches of the area led to the seizure of marine navigation equipment and high-powered boat engines.
These tools were intended for use in executing the international drug smuggling operation, which was effectively dismantled before it could be carried out.
Field investigations are still underway under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in this criminal activity.
Authorities are also working to uncover the broader national and international connections linked to the operation.
