Morocco is solidifying its position as a leading fintech and digital finance hub in Africa, driven by rapid adoption of digital payments and supportive regulation, according to Visa International’s country chief.
“Morocco has made significant strides in modernizing its payments ecosystem and fostering financial innovation,” said Sami Romdhane, CEO of Visa in Morocco, in an interview on the sidelines of GITEX Africa 2025.
The country was an early adopter of contactless payments, which now account for nearly 70% of card transactions, he noted, adding that e-commerce penetration is also accelerating, with online payments representing over 20% of transactions.
Romdhane said this growth is set to continue with the rollout of tokenized payment solutions such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, as Moroccan banks continue to adopt global best practices in digital security and customer experience.
