Morocco ramps up its air power with modern fighter jets and advanced training

Morocco currently operates about 284 military aircraft, with this number expected to grow to 320 in the coming years, according to the 2025 World Air Forces Guide.

This expansion is part of a strategic plan to modernize the Royal Moroccan Air Force, replace aging jets, and bolster its capabilities in an increasingly tense regional climate.

At the heart of this transformation is Morocco’s F-16 fleet. The country already flies 15 of the F-16C Viper multi-role fighters and has 24 more on the way.

These sleek, high-tech jets are known for their agility, advanced targeting systems, and overall combat effectiveness, making them a popular choice worldwide.

But the country isn’t just looking ahead—it’s also making the most of its older aircraft. The Moroccan Air Force still operates 46 Mirage F1s and 22 F-5E fighters, aircraft that date back decades.

Despite their age, these jets remain in service thanks to Morocco’s strong maintenance and upgrade programs.

These planes are still used in interception and escort missions, and even in advanced training roles.

When it comes to helicopters, the air force owns 24 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters, with 12 more on the way. These are some of the world’s most powerful and versatile helicopters, built to handle combat in all conditions.

The helicopter fleet also includes various models for transport and support roles, such as Bell 205s, 212s, and 206s, CH-47Ds, and SA 330 and SA 342 models.

The transport fleet is diverse too. It includes C-27J Spartans, C-130 Hercules (14 in total), CN-235s, and light planes like the King Air 200/300/350 series.

These aircraft play a role in quickly moving troops and gear across challenging terrains and are vital during emergencies and natural disasters.

The Royal Moroccan Navy maintains an aerial wing that includes King Air 350s and Eurocopter AS565 and Bell 412 helicopters, mainly used for maritime patrol, anti-smuggling, and border protection, especially along Morocco’s vast 3500-kilometer coastline.
