The International University of Rabat (UIR) won two medals on Saturday, including a gold one, at the 50th Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions, held from April 9 to 13.
Asmae Berrada was awarded the gold medal for her “Hybrid Gravitational Energy Storage” (HyGES) project, a first for UIR. This is an innovative energy storage system combining pulley gravity and hydraulic mechanisms. HyGES offers a modular, reliable, and cost-effective solution for electricity storage.
Inventors Ahmed Zouggar and Maouéna Fongbedji were awarded the silver medal for their “FootStep Guard” project: an intelligent orthopedic prosthesis equipped with a vibrating alert system that prevents sudden shocks by warning the user when his or her foot is approaching the ground. The innovation is designed for safer, more comfortable rehabilitation after an operation.
Mohsine Bouya, Director of UIR’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, congratulated the inventors and project leaders for their talent, hard work, and contribution to Moroccan excellence on the international stage.
“This double success is a real recognition for research and innovation at the UIR, confirming its commitment to innovation with 650 patents, making it the leading university in Africa, and to the development of high-impact technological solutions,” he told MAP.
UIR is still ranked 1st in Africa in terms of patents (650 patents), according to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Bouya added.
A key event for innovation enthusiasts, the exhibition brings together participants from over 40 countries and regions, showcasing the technologies of the future.
