US Consulate issues safety alert ahead of pro-Palestinian demonstration in Rabat

The U.S. Consulate General in Casablanca has issued a security alert to American citizens in Morocco, urging them to exercise caution and avoid expected mass demonstrations in Rabat in support of the Palestinian cause.

According to an official statement, the demonstration is scheduled to begin Sunday morning at Bab El Had Square in the Moroccan capital. The consulate warned that large crowds may cause significant traffic disruptions and road closures in areas hosting the gatherings.

While such demonstrations in Morocco are typically peaceful, the U.S. mission noted that large crowds can lead to unpredictable situations, especially in the event of security interventions. It advised both consular staff and American nationals to steer clear of demonstration areas, particularly during the afternoon and evening.

The consulate recommended staying informed through local media, avoiding large crowds, carrying valid identification at all times, and complying with instructions from Moroccan law enforcement authorities.

Additionally, American citizens were encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive real-time security updates. The consulate also provided contact details for U.S. nationals needing assistance, urging them to reach out to the U.S. Embassy in Rabat or the consulate in Casablanca if necessary.

The advisory comes as several Moroccan rights organizations and civil society groups called for a national march in Rabat on Sunday morning to express solidarity with the Palestinian people and denounce ongoing Israeli military actions in Gaza, including forced displacement and field operations.
