Two Moroccan films will compete for awards at the 15th edition of the Malmö Arab Film Festival (MAAF) in Sweden, taking place from April 29 to May 5.
The two films in competition are “Everybody Loves Touda” by Nabil Ayouch, which is participating in the official feature film competition (11 films), and “Chikha” by Zahoua Raji and Ayoub Layoussifi, which is competing in the short film category (11 films), according to the organizers.
“Everybody Loves Touda” takes the audience on an emotional journey, highlighting the captivating story of Touda, a young woman who dreams of becoming a chikha (a traditional singer), and whose life is turned upside down by a series of unexpected events.
The short film “Chikha” offers a unique opportunity to explore the popular musical art of Aïta through the story of Fatine, a 17-year-old girl living in Azemmour with her mother, a chikha, and her grandfather. Fatine is torn between continuing her family’s artistic tradition and pursuing a more conventional life after completing her baccalaureate.
Since its inception in 2011, the Malmö Arab Film Festival has become one of the most significant platforms for Arab cinema in Europe, aiming to promote diversity and tolerance through film while connecting Nordic countries and the Arab world. The event also seeks to foster opportunities for cooperation, co-production, and distribution by bringing together producers, funding bodies, and film distributors through seminars, workshops, and debates.
