Two Moroccan soldiers were killed and a third injured while carrying out their duty in an anti-drug operation, highlighting the high risks faced by the Royal Armed Forces in securing the nation’s borders.
According to the military affairs page “FAR-MAROC,” the tragic incident occurred last Sunday in the Takounit area of Zagora province. A military patrol was in pursuit of a four-wheel-drive vehicle loaded with cannabis when the driver, in a desperate escape attempt, deliberately rammed into the patrol, causing severe injuries to three soldiers.
The two fallen servicemen, identified as Corporal Faisal Moujahid and Corporal Mohammed Hassnaoui, succumbed to their injuries while being transported to the hospital. The third soldier remains under medical care.
The Royal Armed Forces swiftly arranged a military helicopter to transport the bodies of the deceased to their hometowns, where they were laid to rest in solemn ceremonies in Bzou (Azilal province) and Ain Kechour (Oued Zem). The funerals were attended by senior military and local officials, members of the Royal Gendarmerie and Auxiliary Forces, as well as the soldiers’ families and comrades.
The armed forces expressed their deepest condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers, praying for their souls and wishing the injured soldier a swift recovery.
Morocco continues to face significant security challenges related to drug trafficking, particularly along its borders. The Royal Armed Forces have intensified their efforts to curb the smuggling of illicit substances, often at great personal risk.
