Governor of Bank Al-Maghrib, Abdellatif Jouahri confirmed that Morocco’s “digital dirham” will be implemented in the medium to long term, due to the complexity of the transition.
Speaking after the Bank’s first quarterly meeting of 2025 on Tuesday, Jouahri emphasized that Morocco is still in the early stages, aiming to prioritize financial inclusion over the goals of developed nations.
The central bank has completed a draft law on crypto-assets and is now focusing on a digital dirham, with collaboration from the World Bank and IMF. Jouahri also revealed a pilot digital currency project with Egypt to evaluate the impacts of such a currency on financial stability.
In addition, the bank announced a 25-basis point cut to its key interest rate, lowering it to 2.25%, to support economic activity and employment.
