Morocco plays a key role in trade and development in Africa, standing out in several strategic sectors, according to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).
In its Economic Report on Africa 2025, published on the occasion of the 57th session of the UN-ECA (March 12–18 in Addis Ababa), the organization highlighted Morocco’s strategic role in key areas, including fertilizer production, trade openness, and significant advancements in digital connectivity.
The report underscores that Morocco is Africa’s leading phosphate producer and holds the world’s largest reserves, noting that this strategic position strengthens its role in fertilizer supply and food security across the continent.
Regarding digital connectivity, the document notes that Morocco stands out with an Internet penetration rate of 90%, one of the highest in Africa, emphasizing that this advantage facilitates the emergence of a competitive digital economy.
Citing Morocco as a model of trade openness, the ECA stresses that, thanks to a proactive policy of opening up to trade, the country ranks among the most internationally integrated African economies.
The report also highlights Morocco’s role in African air transport, noting that the Kingdom, benefiting from market liberalization and the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM), contributes to regional economic integration.
