Morocco reiterated on Monday at the African Union (AU) in Addis Ababa, the imperative of an effective and efficient pan-African institution to meet the expectations and aspirations of African citizens in terms of peace, security, and development.
Speaking at a meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the AU (COREP), Ambassador Mohamed Arrouchi, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the African Union (AU) and the UNECA, reaffirmed that Morocco’s commitment within the AU is rooted in the enlightened vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. This vision aims to place the vital interests of African citizens and the noble causes of the continent at the heart of the Union’s agenda.
To achieve these objectives, Morocco has consistently emphasized that the effectiveness and efficiency of the institution depend on the imperative of good administrative and financial governance within the AU Commission, as well as the credibility and transparency of the intergovernmental process.
This will enable the pan-African institution to meet African citizens’ expectations for peace, security, and development, while securing a key position on the global stage as a strong and credible institution capable of amplifying Africa’s voice and effectively defending the vital interests of its citizens, Ambassador Arrouchi stressed.
Accordingly, trust and optimism in the new Commission and its leadership primarily stem from its ability to redefine its role in supporting the intergovernmental process and collaborating with COREP and deliberative bodies, he noted, reiterating Morocco’s full confidence in Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, President of the AU Commission, and his proven leadership.
Ambassador Arrouchi emphasized that, given that the primary responsibility for managing the AU Commission lies with its President, “it is time for our intergovernmental process to consider expanding the President’s powers to strengthen his role and leadership within the Commission.”
Secondly, trust and optimism also stem from the firm commitment and strong will of the new Commission and its President to establish new paradigms in administrative and financial governance—an essential and non-negotiable requirement for the proper functioning of the institution, he added.
In this regard, maintaining the highest standards of competence and productivity, along with the full respect for the principles of integrity, discipline, and adherence to the hierarchical order by the Commission’s staff, should be a top priority, he stressed.
Furthermore, Ambassador Arrouchi reiterated Morocco’s firm and ongoing commitment, as a founding member of the pan-African institution, to making a constructive and high-value contribution to the implementation of Agenda 2063.
