Morocco has strengthened its position within the institutional architecture of the African Union following regional consultations held at the North African level, after being entrusted with several leading responsibilities in the Organization’s strategic bodies and structures.
These new responsibilities confirm the Kingdom’s growing standing within continental bodies and underscore Morocco’s steadfast commitment to the African Union’s major strategic priorities, including institutional reforms, governance, the Organization’s funding, economic integration, as well as monitoring major challenges facing the continent.
With nine senior positions of responsibility, Morocco ranked first in the allocation of posts negotiated within the Northern Region. In this regard, the Kingdom will assume the position of Vice-Chairperson of the Ministerial Committee on African Candidatures within the International System and will also serve as Vice-Chairperson of the Bureau of the Ministerial Committee on Scale of Assessment and Contributions of AU member States.
Morocco will also serve on the Specialized Technical Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs, as well as the Specialized Technical Committee on Economic Development, Trade, Tourism, Industry and Minerals, two important STCs in the development of continental policies.
Within the sub-committees of the Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC), the Kingdom will serve as Vice-Chairperson of the Bureau of the PRC Sub-Committee on Structural Reforms and as Chairperson of the PRC Sub-Committee on Environmental Issues, two structuring themes within the continental organization. Morocco will also sit as a member of the PRC Sub-Committee on Human Rights, Democracy and Governance.
This proven trust is further demonstrated through the Kingdom’s appointment to the Governing Board of the African Migration Observatory, as well as Morocco’s provisions of experts to contribute to the work of this body.
