Report: Morocco maintains terrorism-free status in the 2025 Global Terrorism Index
Monday 10 March 2025 - 12:00

The 2025 Global Terrorism Index report from the Institute for Economics & Peace emphasized that Morocco remains free of terrorism, scoring a perfect zero on the index. This means there haven’t been any terrorist incidents in the country over the past five years.

Morocco came in 100th globally, alongside other countries that haven’t seen any terrorist activity or related threats during the reporting period.

Amid rising security challenges in the Middle East and North Africa, terrorism continues to impact several countries, said the report, with Syria, Israel, Iraq, Iran, and Yemen among the most affected.

While the overall impact of terrorism in the region worsened slightly in 2024, the report indicated that some countries saw improvements—9 recorded progress, while 7 experienced setbacks, and 4 countries in the region, including Morocco, have remained free of terrorist activity for at least the past five years.

The same source highlighted that the number of terrorist incidents dropped slightly from 666 in 2023 to 618 in 2024, while total deaths fell by half, from 2,083 in 2023 to 1,058 in 2024.

The impact of terrorism was low in Algeria, which ranked 42nd globally with a score of 2.415, followed closely by Tunisia at 43rd with a score of 2.184. Libya came in at 53rd with a score of 1.612, showing significant improvement compared to previous years.

Gulf countries strengthened their security rankings, with Qatar and Kuwait maintaining a perfect score of zero, placing them among the safest countries globally.

Bahrain ranked 98th with a minimal impact score of 0.059, while Saudi Arabia secured the 75th spot with a score of 0.845.

The impact of terrorism in the UAE has remained very low over the past five years, with the country ranking 67th globally and scoring 1.178. Oman, however, ranked the highest among Gulf nations at 37th, with a score of 2.927.

The report indicated that “the Sahel remains the global epicenter of terrorism, accounting for over half of all terrorism-related deaths in 2024 with the number of countries affected increasing. Five of the ten countries most impacted by terrorism are in this region.”

It said that “overall conflict deaths in the region exceeded 25,000 for the first time since the inception of the Index. Of these, 3,885 were attributed to terrorism. Terrorism deaths here are now ten times higher than in 2019.”
