Mexican political figures advocated Tuesday for strengthening relations between Morocco and Mexico, two countries that play a strategic role in their respective regional environments.
On the occasion of a plenary session dedicated by Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies to the House of Representatives’ Speaker, Rachid Talbi Alami, who is paying a two-day visit to this Latin American country, many leaders of Mexican political parties took to the podium to welcome the holding of this session as a symbol of the friendship between the two countries, which are celebrating the 60th anniversary of their bilateral relations this year.
They particularly insisted on the need to raise this partnership to the level expected by the peoples of the two countries.
Former Senate President, Senator Olga Sánchez Cordero, from the Morena coalition, which has the majority in parliament, highlighted Morocco’s strategic role for Mexico as a gateway to Africa, while Mexico represents a key platform for the Kingdom in Latin America. It is imperative, she argued, to further strengthen trade and increase bilateral investments to take full advantage of this complementarity.
For her part, MP Marcela Guerra, from the Institutional Revolutionary Party, gave an overview of the potential for cooperation between the two countries, supported by more than 17 cooperation agreements covering various sectors.
She also stressed the importance of multilateralism in addressing global challenges such as climate change, migration, and the fight against arms and drug trafficking and noted, in this sense, the potential of Morocco and Mexico as respective gateways to Africa and the Americas, capable of contributing to stability and international development.
In the same vein, MP César Augusto Rendón García, from the National Action Party, indicated that diplomatic relations between the two countries are based on more than 60 years of mutual respect and international cooperation.
He highlighted the importance of strengthening these ties, mainly in the sectors of trade, manufacturing and investment, recalling Morocco’s central role as a bridge between Europe and Africa. While advocating for a more modern and flexible approach to bilateral relations, in tune with current challenges, the MP stressed the importance of “constructive and pragmatic diplomacy, particularly with regard to the issue of the Moroccan Sahara”.
MP Blanca Estela Hernández Rodríguez, from the Green Ecologist Party, spoke about the evolution of trade in recent years and the potential for bilateral cooperation in areas such as agribusiness, renewable energy and water resource management.
She also highlighted the opportunities for Morocco to facilitate access for Mexican agri-food products in North Africa and highlighted the fruitful collaboration between the two countries in international forums on global issues such as non-proliferation of weapons and the fight against climate change.
This plenary session was marked by a speech by the speaker of the House of Representatives, accompanied in this trip by a delegation of presidents of parliamentary groups and a grouping within the parliament, for a two-day visit to this Latin American country.
