Moroccan health experts urge caution over newly discovered bat virus

Moroccan health experts are urging caution regarding a newly discovered bat virus that Chinese researchers say can enter human cells through the same pathway as COVID-19.

According to Reuters, the discovery has raised concerns about the virus’ potential to spread among humans, leading to a rise in global vaccine company stocks.

However, a Bloomberg report cited American experts who believe the Chinese study may be exaggerated, noting that the study itself advises against overstating the virus’ risk.

Tayeb Hamdi, a physician and researcher in health policies and systems, explained that the study only demonstrates the virus’ ability to enter human cells in a laboratory setting. “No real-world cases of transmission from bats to humans have been recorded, Hamdi told Hespress.

Hamdi noted that viruses typically follow three transmission patterns: animal-to-animal, animal-to-human, and human-to-human.

While some viruses, such as avian influenza, have jumped from animals to humans, only those capable of sustained human-to-human transmission pose a pandemic threat, he said.

While the bat virus is not an immediate danger, it still requires vigilance, Hamdi added, pointing to increased global attention following the study’s release.

Mustapha Naji, a virology expert and member of Morocco’s COVID-19 vaccination scientific committee, emphasized that bats are known carriers of many viruses, some of which can spread to other animals.

He called for further scientific research to determine the virus’ transmission potential and how it compares to COVID-19. The spread of this virus depends on specific protein receptors in the human body, Naji explained.

Naji also cautioned against dismissing the Chinese study outright, stating that all scientific health research undergoes rigorous field testing.

Authorities and experts continue to monitor developments as researchers investigate the virus’ potential risks.
