The Moroccan Ministry of Commerce has launched an investigation into the anti-dumping duties on carpets and floor coverings imported from Egypt, following a request from the company Oriental Weavers.
This partial review aims to assess whether the economic conditions that led to the imposition of these duties in 2022 are still valid.
Since then, a 35.33% anti-dumping duty has been applied to Egyptian imports to protect Moroccan producers from what was seen as unfair competition.
The Egyptian company Oriental Weavers, a major player in the sector, argues that the situation has changed, particularly due to strategic investments and reduced production costs.
According to them, this makes the continued application of the anti-dumping duty unnecessary. The investigation, which will last 15 months, could lead to a temporary suspension of the duties, with an equivalent deposit being collected in the meantime to avoid influencing the investigation’s outcome.
The purpose of the inquiry is to determine if changes in the economy and business practices still justify these measures, or if they need to be revised. The results of this investigation, which will end in July 2024, will affect the conditions under which Egyptian carpets and floor coverings are imported into Morocco.
