The 38th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) continued on Sunday at the headquarters of the African Union (AU) in Addis Ababa.
The first day of the summit was marked by the election of Djibouti’s Foreign Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf as the new Chairperson of the AU Commission.
On the eve of the summit, the AU Executive Council elected four commissioners for the organization, namely the Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, the Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment, as well as the Commissioner for Energy and Infrastructure.
The Council will soon have to elect two more commissioners and continue elections at the level of the Union’s Peace and Security Council.
The summit’s agenda includes consideration of a range of issues, including the institutional reform of the AU and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
