Turkey fines Adidas for not disclosing pigskin in popular Samba OG sneakers

Turkey has fined Adidas over US$15,000 for not disclosing that its popular Samba OG sneakers contain pigskin.

The advertising regulator criticized Adidas for labeling the shoes as made from “real leather” without specifying the source, which conflicts with religious beliefs.

The regulator emphasized that materials conflicting with “the religious sensibilities of the majority of society” must be clearly stated in ads.

The company confirmed it had updated the product’s material description on its Turkish website but did not comment on the fine.

This follows a 2020 ruling by Turkey’s Presidency of Religious Affairs, which declared that using pigskin in clothing or footwear is “not permissible” under Islamic law, as pigskin cannot be purified through tanning or similar processes.
