French President Emmanuel Macron’s approval rating has plunged to its lowest point since his election in 2017, according to a poll published Sunday.
The Ifop survey, conducted for Le Journal du Dimanche, found that only 21% of respondents were satisfied with Macron’s performance.
This marks a decline from November’s 22% approval rating and places Macron below the levels of popularity he held during the height of the “Yellow Vest” protests in 2019.
A significant 79% of those surveyed expressed dissatisfaction, with 35% describing themselves as “dissatisfied” and 44% as “very dissatisfied.”
Notably, Macron’s support among senior citizens and retirees—traditionally a stronghold for him—has dropped by 10% since December.
The slump in popularity follows Macron’s decision to dissolve parliament in the summer of 2024, ahead of the Paris Olympic Games. The subsequent elections left France in a state of political crisis.
The Ifop poll surveyed 2,001 adults aged 18 and over online between January 15 and January 23.
