Instagram has announced a range of new features set to launch this week, including a significant extension of reels’ video duration and a revamped user profile design. The changes aim to enhance user experience and keep up with evolving trends in social media content.
The platform will now allow users to upload Reels up to three minutes long, a considerable increase from the previous 90-second limit. This update is designed to support creators looking to share longer, more detailed videos.
In addition, Instagram is replacing its traditional square grid layout on user profiles with a rectangular design. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, explained the rationale behind the change, stating, “Square photos are a core part of Instagram’s legacy, but the majority of content today is shared in a vertical format. This update reflects the current preferences of our users.”
Another noteworthy addition is a new tab in the reels section. This feature will showcase videos that friends have liked or commented on, a nod to the “Friends Activity” feature removed years ago due to privacy concerns. The move is intended to boost engagement by offering users insights into their friends’ interactions on the platform.
