British man charged with burning down Danish pro-Polisario NGO headquarters

Danish police have reported progress in their investigation into the arson attack that occurred on January 12 at the headquarters of Global Aktion, an NGO based in Copenhagen. A 19-year-old British national, suspected of being a gang member, has been arrested and is being held in custody on charges of “serious arson,” according to local media reports.

Global Aktion has not yet commented on these new developments. However, the NGO addressed a letter to the Danish Minister of Justice earlier this week, seeking updates on the investigation. In the letter, the organization expressed its “astonishment that no member of the government has condemned the bomb attack on the premises of a lawful political organization.”

The NGO emphasized that the message left by the perpetrators was “unequivocal,” describing the act as a clear attempt to disrupt its work advocating for human rights, freedom, and opposing Morocco’s “brutal occupation of Western Sahara.”

Neither Polisario representatives nor associated media outlets have responded to the arrest of the young British suspect. Previously, Polisario had accused Morocco of being behind the attack, a claim echoed uncritically by some Algerian press outlets.

Supporters of Polisario in Denmark held a sit-in outside Global Aktion’s headquarters on Wednesday night. Global Aktion has also criticized the Danish government for its decision in September to back Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara.
