A measles outbreak in Tangier has sparked concern among residents, particularly parents, after several cases were reported in public and private schools. Authorities and health officials are closely monitoring the highly contagious disease to prevent further spread.
Hospitals and health centers in Tangier are treating children with measles daily, isolating them to minimize transmission, medical sources said. The Mohammed VI University Hospital has been receiving approximately seven cases per day, all from the Tangier-Asilah region.
Despite the rise in cases, local officials maintain that the situation is under control. “The situation is normal and does not warrant concern,” one official said, emphasizing that efforts are ongoing to contain the outbreak.
Education officials reported no new cases in recent days, and students who previously contracted measles have recovered and returned to school. “The situation in schools is stable,” an education representative said.
Meanwhile, Tangier 2 prison, which had reported cases earlier, has seen conditions stabilize, with no recent hospital admissions linked to measles, according to medical sources.
The Ministry of Education’s Tangier Regional Directorate has launched a vaccination awareness campaign, urging parents to ensure their children are up to date on their immunizations. The campaign is conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Protection.
To date, 75 cases have been recorded across 15 of the city’s 400 schools, including private institutions. One fatality has been reported: a student who also had diabetes.
