A measles outbreak in Tangier 2 Prison has prompted heightened concern among local officials, leading courts to reinstate video conferencing for inmate trials to prevent further spread of the disease.
The General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration reported that 23 inmates at Tangier 2 have contracted measles, marking the highest number of cases among Moroccan prisons. This has caused local courts to halt in-person appearances until the facility is declared infection-free, sources said.
“This precaution mirrors measures adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic, aiming to ensure public safety while maintaining judicial processes,” a judicial source stated.
Nationwide, the delegation reported 47 cases across nine correctional facilities, with seven recoveries. Tangier 2 accounts for 15 of the active cases, with one inmate receiving hospital care. Additional cases were recorded in prisons in Mohammedia, Ain Borja, Kenitra, and Fes, among others.
Five staff members also tested positive, with four still undergoing treatment.
To curb the outbreak, authorities have vaccinated 3,788 inmates and 84 staff members, in partnership with regional health services. Preventive measures remain in effect across all facilities, the delegation said.
Health officials are coordinating closely with prison administrators to manage the situation and prevent further spread, emphasizing strict adherence to safety protocols.
