The bustling port of Tangier Med, a major gateway for Moroccan exports, has been increasingly grappling with the issue of drug trafficking.
Authorities have reported a concerning trend of narcotics being concealed within cargo trucks destined for international markets.
This recurring problem has placed transport companies and their employees under heightened scrutiny.
Several cases have emerged where drivers, motivated by the prospect of quick profits or connections with international drug syndicates, have been implicated in these illicit activities.
While many observers believe that a systemic link exists between the international transportation industry and drug trafficking networks, representatives of transport associations have been dismissive of such claims.
A high-ranking official at Tangier Med port, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Hespress Ar that not all drug seizures involving cargo trucks can be attributed to the exporting companies themselves.
“In many cases, the responsibility lies with the drivers,” the official stated.
There are two main scenarios: one involves drivers attempting to smuggle small quantities of drugs, typically hidden in their personal belongings. In such instances, the driver faces legal consequences, while the company may be held liable for civil damages.
The second scenario involves larger quantities of drugs concealed within the truck, often in hidden compartments. Here, the company can be held accountable as they are expected to maintain adequate security measures.
The official further explained that Moroccan law allows for the possibility of plea bargains in drug trafficking cases.
Offenders can reduce their sentences by paying a fine, the amount of which is determined by the quantity of drugs seized.
Amer Zghinou, president of the Moroccan Association for Transcontinental Road Transport (AMTRI), acknowledged the issue but said that the association takes a firm stance against members involved in drug trafficking.
“If a member is found guilty of drug trafficking, we expel them,” he said.
Zghinou differentiated between cases where drugs are concealed within the cargo itself and those where they are hidden in secret compartments within the truck, noting that the latter places greater responsibility on the company.
