French Ligue 1 club Olympique Marseille (OM) announced on Wednesday the appointment of former Atlas Lions’ captain Mehdi Benatia as Director of Football.
“After working as a sports advisor since November 2023, Mehdi Benatia is continuing his adventure at a club dear to his heart, alongside President Pablo Longoria, who was behind his return to OM,” said the club in a statement published on its website.
Having trained at OM before playing for some of Europe’s most prestigious clubs, including Bayern Munich and Juventus FC, the former captain of the Moroccan national team “now leads the club’s entire sporting policy, from the training center to the first team”, the same source adds.
The former Moroccan international was fully involved in the launch of the club’s ambitious long-term sporting project, as well as last summer’s transfer window.
“Olympique Marseille is delighted to be able to count on the vision, experience and professionalism of its new Director of Football,” the press release concludes.
