Morocco has achieved a remarkable 70% reduction in its maternal mortality rate over the past two decades, Minister of Health and Social Protection Amine Tahraoui announced on Monday during a session in the House of Representatives.
The maternal mortality rate has decreased from 244 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2000 to 72 deaths in 2020, “thanks to the significant efforts made by Morocco in medical care, particularly in gynecology and obstetrics,” Tahraoui explained in response to a question from the Authenticity and Modernity group.
To further strengthen these gains, the Ministry is intensifying its efforts to ensure adequate medical support in this field. This includes the opening of positions to train specialist doctors on a contractual basis through annual residency exams.
Tahraoui also highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to annually enhancing public hospitals by adding essential specialties, ensuring the continuity of healthcare services and guaranteeing citizens’ right to quality care.
