Minister of Health and Social Protection, Amine Tahraoui called on Monday for the strict enforcement of legislation to protect non-smokers from tobacco smoke and to ban smoking in all public spaces.
Speaking during a parliamentary session, Tahraoui emphasized the importance of involving everyone—individuals, authorities, and civil society—in efforts to combat smoking, particularly in preventing youth from starting.
He highlighted the serious health risks posed by smoking, describing it as a global epidemic that claims nearly 8 million lives annually worldwide.
In Morocco, the smoking rate among adults aged 18 and over is 13.4%, and smoking causes 8% of all deaths in the country. It is also responsible for 75% of lung cancer deaths and 10% of deaths from respiratory diseases.
