A significant weather shift is expected to affect Morocco starting this evening, as an Atlantic low-pressure system impacts the country, bringing rain, thunderstorms, and snow, according to the General Directorate of Meteorology.
Hussein Yacoub, the directorate’s communication officer, explained that the system, centered west of Europe, will extend its southern edges toward northern Morocco, causing rainstorms beginning Sunday afternoon and continuing into the night. Strong winds and a noticeable temperature drop will accompany the storms, raising concerns about potential risks related to the severe weather conditions.
Rain and thunderstorms are expected to affect most of the northern regions, with rainfall amounts between 40 and 60 mm in several provinces. Heavy snowfall is predicted in areas above 1700 meters, particularly in the provinces of Chefchaouen, Azilal, Ifrane, Midelt, Boulemane, Safi, and Al Hoceima. Snow accumulation could range from 15 to 30 cm, and an orange alert has been issued for these regions.
The rain is expected to impact the Atlantic plains, the Rif mountains, and the Mediterranean coast, with possible extensions into the inland areas, including the Saiss plain and the Middle Atlas mountains. Additionally, areas in the extreme north, including Tangier-Assilah, Larache, M’diq-Fnideq, Tetouan, Chefchaouen, Taounate, Sidi Kacem, and Kenitra, will experience thunderstorms, with rainfall reaching as much as 60 mm.
Yacoub stressed that while these conditions will persist into Monday, temperatures will continue to fall. Snow is also anticipated in the higher elevations of the Rif and Atlas mountains, which may further exacerbate the situation. Authorities are urging the public to take necessary precautions to stay safe as the weather event unfolds.
The weather changes are a reminder for residents and travelers to remain alert to fluctuating conditions throughout the coming days.
