A police officer from Zambia was arrested after allegedly becoming intoxicated and releasing over a dozen prisoners to celebrate New Year’s Eve.

According to local media, the 13 freed prisoners, who were held on charges of assault, affray, and theft, never returned, and a manhunt has been launched to find them.

Zambia’s Police Service said that the officer was “in a state of intoxication” and “forcibly seized cell keys” before proceeding to unlock both male and female cells, telling the prisoners that “they were free to cross over into the New Year.”
