A group of small taxi drivers in Rabat caused outrage after intervening to stop a driver using a ride-hailing app, sparking calls for regulation of app-based transportation services in Morocco.
The incident, captured in a video circulating online, showed several taxi drivers ambushing a private car driver working for a ride-hailing service. The event has drawn sharp criticism from social media users and professionals who support modernizing the transportation sector.
Authorities in Rabat arrested five individuals on Thursday, accusing them of reckless driving and endangering public safety. The vehicles involved were seized, and the suspects remain in custody pending an investigation.
Samir Frabi, Secretary-General of the Democratic Union of Transport, condemned the incident, calling it a “blatant violation of the law” and harmful to public interest. He added that such actions tarnish the reputation of taxi drivers and do not reflect the behavior of the majority who follow regulations.
“These chaotic actions, often resembling Hollywood-style scenes, jeopardize public safety and create disorder,” Frabi said.
The incident is the latest in a series of confrontations between traditional taxi drivers and ride-hailing services. A similar episode in Casablanca recently led to the arrest of a suspect after an altercation in front of a Russian official.
Frabi urged the government to expedite the regulation of app-based transportation, citing its potential to enhance public mobility, create jobs, and attract foreign investment.
As Morocco prepares to host international events, Frabi emphasized the importance of aligning the transportation sector with global standards.
“We need to showcase a modern image of Morocco to visitors who rely on technology for their transportation,” he said.
Tensions in the transportation sector are mounting, as ride-hailing services continue to grow in popularity across the country while taxi professionals get more aggravated with time.
