Moroccan authorities rescued 19 individuals held in severe conditions at a farm in the Al-Shaara municipality near Attaouia, officials said Tuesday. The operation was led by the Judicial Center of the Royal Gendarmerie under the supervision of the regional commander.
The raid, prompted by a family’s complaint about a missing relative, uncovered the captives, who had been suffering from addiction complications and psychological disorders. Investigators arrested two primary suspects and freed the individuals, who had reportedly endured more than two years of exploitation.
Authorities said the victims were brought to the farm under false promises of treatment for addiction and mental health issues but were subjected to inhumane conditions and severe exploitation.
The rescued individuals have been transferred to the regional hospital in Kalaa of Sraghna for medical treatment. Meanwhile, an in-depth investigation is underway, supervised by the public prosecutor’s office, to uncover all aspects of the case and assign responsibility.
This incident highlights ongoing challenges related to illegal confinement and exploitation in Morocco. Authorities have pledged to bring those responsible to justice.
