Aware of the challenges facing the environment, Morocco is pulling out all the stops. To this end, on Tuesday December 24, 2024, the local Tamesna prison hosted a ceremony to sign a partnership agreement for the creation of a unit specializing in the collection and sorting of waste for recycling.
In line with the General Delegation’s orientation of integrating the environmental dimension as a transversal axis of its strategy – an axis including environment, gender and vulnerability – in the management of penitentiary affairs, and as part of the Productive Prisons program aiming to create new employment opportunities for inmates according to an approach combining rehabilitation and economic dimension, the local prison of Tamesna kicked off this ambitious initiative, this Tuesday, December 24, 2024.

Signed between the General Delegation, the Mohammed VI Fondation for inmate reinsertion, and the Attawafouq cooperative, this cooperation involves activating several resources in the waste recycling sector.
In addition, the agreement aims to establish a general partnership framework between the signatory parties for the training and employment of inmates in the collection and sorting of waste produced by the penitentiary establishment. It also marks the launch of the Délégation Générale’s “Recycling” project, which will gradually be extended to other prisons in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region. This project involves setting up integrated production units covering all stages of waste recycling within prisons.

It should be recalled that the creation of this production unit is part of the “Productive Prisons” program, initiated by the Délégation Générale with the aim of opening up prisons to partnerships with cooperatives to diversify rehabilitation programs. The aim of these partnerships is to set up modern production units to train and employ inmates, thus guaranteeing their real and effective rehabilitation with a view to reintegrating them into the socio-economic fabric after their release.
