Executive Director of the Moroccan Observatory for Very Small and Medium Enterprises, Amal Idrissi, announced that only 15% of businesses in Morocco are led by women, a figure that has remained stable since 2020.
Speaking in Casablanca during the presentation of the OMTPME’s 2022-2023 report, Idrissi highlighted the persistent gender disparities, particularly in access to banking credit.
Only 14.6% of women-led businesses have access to bank loans, and they account for just 11.3% of total credit outstanding.
Regionally, the highest proportion of women-led businesses is in Marrakech-Safi (17.6%), followed by Rabat-Salé-Kenitra (16.6%) and Casablanca-Settat (15.6%).
However, regions like Béni Mellal-Khénifra and the Oriental lag behind with rates around 10%.
Female entrepreneurship is notably strong in sectors such as healthcare and social services (40%), beauty services (30%), and education (30%), but remains weak in transportation, mining, and construction, with rates under 10%.
Idrissi also noted significant growth in business creation, with 96,442 new companies in 2023, a 20% increase from 2017. Microenterprises made up 99% of these new businesses, particularly in sectors like information, communication, and real estate.
However, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have faced challenges, especially in regions like Souss-Massa and Fès-Meknès, where dissolution rates have risen.
