Spain's defense minister criticizes PP for unfounded accusations against Morocco over Pegasus hack

Spain’s Minister Margarita Robles criticized the People’s Party (PP) on Tuesday for “making accusations against Morocco without evidence” regarding the Pegasus software infection of the mobile devices of the head of government and several of his ministers, according to Spanish news outlet Europa Press.

Robles, according to the same source, urged the deputy of PP, José Enrique Núñez Guijarro, to be careful with his statements made in the seat of popular sovereignty, insisting “we have to be respectful.”

She clarified that “the responsibility for the infection will have to be determined by the Justice system.”

The Minister of Defense pointed out that the National Cryptologic Center (CCN) had submitted ten reports and devices requested by the judiciary in connection with the case, the most recent on October 23 of this year.

According to Robles, this was an extension of another previously requested. She reiterated that both the government and the National Intelligence Center (CNI) had cooperated fully with the judiciary and would continue to do so.

For context, the Spanish National Security Report for 2023 previously emphasized that Morocco does not engage in hostilities against Spain,  contradicting allegations of Moroccan espionage against Spanish officials.

The report rebuted claims that Morocco used Pegasus spyware against Spanish leaders and explicitly denies any evidence of Moroccan involvement in such activities, which aligns with previous denials by Spanish officials in 2022.

The Spanish government refused to speculate on who may have been behind the bugging. Media outlets, however, did not stall in attributing the attack to Morocco.

For his part, Óscar López, who has served as the 12th Moncloa Chief of Staff since 2021, firmly dismissed the allegations as “fake news, slander, and conspiracy theories” when appearing before the Joint National Security Commission in the House of Representatives, according to Iberian news outlet ElDiario.
