The International Football Federation (FIFA) released the preliminary nominees for its The Best 2024 awards on Friday, featuring notable Moroccan representation.
Achraf Hakimi, the right-back for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), was named among the candidates for Best Defender. Hakimi, widely regarded as one of the top players in his position, is a strong contender for the final selection.
Yassine Bounou, goalkeeper for Al Hilal FC in Saudi Arabia, received a nomination for Best Goalkeeper. Bounou has earned praise for his stellar performances with both his club and the Moroccan national team, positioning him as one of the leading candidates.
Sofiane Rahimi, forward for Al Ain FC in the United Arab Emirates, was shortlisted for the Best Forward category. Rahimi, who won the Asian Footballer of the Year award last season and was the top scorer at the Paris 2024 Olympics, has been one of the standout players in Asia.
The nominations highlight the growing influence of Moroccan players in international football, with Hakimi and Rahimi also competing for the African Ballon d’Or this year.
In contrast, the absence of Brahim Diaz, the Real Madrid forward, has raised questions among fans and pundits, as Diaz has enjoyed a strong season with his club and the Moroccan national team.
