In a significant move at the Rio de Janeiro Summit, G20 leaders expressed their strong support for a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon, emphasizing the urgent need for humanitarian relief and civilian protection. The declaration, made public on Monday evening, marked a united stance on addressing escalating conflicts and humanitarian crises.

“While expressing our deep concern about the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and the escalation in Lebanon, we emphasize the urgency of expanding the flow of humanitarian assistance and strengthening the protection of civilians, demanding the removal of all obstacles to large-scale humanitarian aid,” the G20 members said under Brazil’s rotating presidency.

Stressing the rights of the Palestinian people, they reiterated their “steadfast commitment to the vision of a two-state solution, coexisting in peace, within secure and recognized borders, in accordance with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.”

Regarding the war in Ukraine, they highlighted the human suffering and additional negative impacts of this conflict on global food and energy security, supply chains, macro-financial stability, inflation, and growth.

“We welcome all relevant and constructive initiatives that support a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace, respecting all objectives and principles of the United Nations Charter to promote peaceful, friendly, and good-neighborly relations among nations,” the Final Declaration stated.

The members of this bloc, which brings together the world’s 19 largest economies, along with the European Union and the African Union, thus highlighted human suffering and the adverse repercussions of war.

They affirmed that all parties must respect their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law and international human rights law, and condemned all acts of aggression against civilians and infrastructure in this regard.

“The peaceful resolution of conflicts, as well as efforts to address crises, diplomacy, and dialogue, are essential. Only with peace can we achieve sustainability and prosperity,” the Final Declaration noted.

The G20 members also committed to advancing the goal of a world free of nuclear weapons and a safer place for all, while ensuring adherence to their obligations in this regard.
