Former communications director for Kamala Harris, Jamal proposed an unconventional idea for how the vice president could still become president in 2024: if Joe Biden were to resign, making Harris president.
During a CNN discussion on the approaching presidential transition, Simmons suggested that Biden could step down within the next 30 days, allowing Harris to take over and avoid the political fallout of overseeing her own defeat during the certification of the election results in the Senate.
He argued that such a move would allow Biden to fulfill his role as a “transitional figure,” which he said could be his last major promise to the American people.
Although there is no indication that Biden is considering resignation, Simmons’ comment sparked a broader conversation. Host Dana Bash dismissed it as an unlikely scenario, humorously noting how it had evolved from an internet meme to a Sunday morning talking point.
Others, like Jon Lovett from “Pod Save America,” joked about the possibility of Biden clearing the way for Harris, with one saying it could allow former President Jimmy Carter to see a female president before his death. Despite the speculation, no concrete steps have been made toward such a dramatic change in leadership.
