President-elect Donald Trump spoke with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Friday, marking their first conversation since 2017, and pledged to work towards ending the war in Gaza, according to statements from the Palestinian presidency and a Palestinian official briefed on the conversation quoted by Axios.
This call signals a potential shift in Palestinian attitudes toward Trump after years of strained relations, particularly following his 2017 decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and move the U.S. embassy there.
The phone call comes after a letter from Abbas to Trump last July, in which the Palestinian leader expressed concern over an assassination attempt against Trump and reiterated his commitment to peace in the Middle East.
In response, Trump sent a brief handwritten message, promising that “everything will be good” and offering his best wishes.
