Professionals in the transport application sector are optimistic that the appointment of Abdessamad Kayouh as the new Minister of Transport and Logistics will signal a turning point in regulating this industry.
Drivers working for multinational companies specializing in app-based transportation have expressed their confidence in Kayouh, a member of the Istiqlal Party, to bring much-needed regulation to the sector. They emphasized that his predecessor, Mohamed Abdeljalil, failed to make any significant contributions during his tenure, leading to chaos in the road transport sector.
Samir Farabi, the Secretary General of the Democratic Transport Union, who advocates for the regulation of technology use in transport, noted that all drivers in this field place high hopes on the new minister to elevate the sector’s importance within the national system.
In a statement to Hespress, Farabi stressed the necessity for Minister Kayouh to hold consultations with industry professionals to expedite the establishment of a legal framework for technology-based transport, especially with major events approaching in the country.
“Regulating smart app transport has become a societal demand due to the rising usage and the influx of large companies investing billions to enter the national market,” he added.
Farabi highlighted that Morocco must take regulatory steps in this area, particularly ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations and the upcoming World Cup, which could create significant employment opportunities amid rising unemployment rates.
Industry stakeholders are urging Minister Kayouh to initiate meetings to accelerate sector regulation, noting that they have already proposed a specific bill for app-based transportation.
