Josep Borrell, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, delivered a robust message of support for Morocco during a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg.
Borrell’s statements were described by a source familiar with the discussions as “a clear European message and a unified response to Algeria’s unacceptable attempts of pressure and interference” regarding a recent ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ).
This collective European stance follows Algeria’s recent recall of ambassadors from 12 European nations that expressed solidarity with Morocco after the ECJ ruling.
The source characterized the EU’s unified position as a “stinging response” to Algeria, highlighting the bloc’s commitment to its partnership with Morocco.
“If Algeria was offended by the support of these countries, it should be stunned today by the intensity of the European response,” the source noted.
The official added that Borrell’s remarks reinforced the strategic nature of a joint statement issued by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Borrell on the day of the court’s decision.
The discussions at the meeting emphasized a realignment among EU institutions, including the Council, the Commission, and the External Action Service, in their approach to Morocco.
Borrell reiterated the EU’s long-standing partnership with Morocco, which has been in place for more than 55 years, noting its “enormous value” and the commitment to “strengthen” and “maintain” this collaboration.
The EU foreign ministers concluded their meeting with a pledge of support for Morocco, indicating that “positive developments” in the partnership are expected in the coming months.
