Over 1,500 MPs and experts from all over the world, including Morocco, are taking part in the 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), which is taking place this week in Geneva under the theme “Harnessing science, technology and innovation for a more peaceful and sustainable future.”
On this occasion, legislators will reflect on what parliaments can do to maximize the benefits but also to mitigate the risks of new technologies, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence (AI).
The Assembly is expected to adopt the new Charter on Ethics in Science and Technology, prepared by the IPU Working Group on Science and Technology. This Charter aims to create a regulatory framework containing principles to guide legislation and decision-making so that science and technology benefit humanity, society and the environment.
MPs are also expected to adopt an IPU resolution on “The impact of artificial intelligence on democracy, human rights and the rule of law.”
The Assembly will also commemorate the entry into force, 25 years ago, of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.
Various IPU bodies will be holding meetings throughout the Assembly, including its four thematic Standing Committees, the Forum of Women MPs, the Forum of Young MPs, and the Committee on the Human Rights of MPs.
IPU bodies dedicated to parliamentary diplomacy and maintaining dialogue between countries at war will also meet, including the Working Group on the Peaceful Resolution of the War in Ukraine and the Committee on Middle East Questions.
Founded in 1889, the IPU is a global organization of national parliaments, which includes 181 member parliaments and 15 associate members. It fosters parliamentary diplomacy and empowers parliaments and parliamentarians to promote peace, democracy, and sustainable development worldwide.
