Moroccan security services on Sunday evening thwarted an illegal migration attempt in the municipality of Tah, the southern province of Tarfaya, and arrested eight people, according to local authorities.
The operation, which occurred 25 kilometers south of Tarfaya, involved a group of 60 would-be migrants. When confronted by security forces, some in the group threw stones, prompting police to fire warning shots. Despite this, the would-be migrants managed to flee, taking advantage of the challenging terrain, the same source pointed out.
Authorities seized a boat equipped with an engine and fuel canisters.
During a search operation, authorities discovered a body, identified as a Moroccan man, who had suffered severe injuries. The body was transported to Moulay El Hassan Ben El Mehdi Hospital in Laayoune for an autopsy.
The Royal Gendarmerie launched a formal investigation under the supervision of the public prosecutor to determine the full scope of the incident and any further individuals involved.
