The United Nations announced the return of its Personal Envoy to the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, after a period of absence will meet with the four parties involved in the conflict before his upcoming briefing to the Security Council, emphasizing the goal of pushing for a political settlement.
Stéphane Dujarric, the UN’s official spokesman, stated that De Mistura is initiating consultations with these parties ahead of his semi-annual briefing in October. The Security Council has not yet disclosed the number of sessions planned for this month, which is critical as it typically results in a decision regarding the MINURSO mission in the Moroccan Sahara, following reports from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and De Mistura.
As De Mistura engages with the relevant parties, including Algeria, Moroccan UN representative Omar Hilale noted that negotiations have stalled due to Algeria’s absence.
Dujarric mentioned that De Mistura has met with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Mauritanian Foreign Minister Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, and Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, and has visited Tindouf camps to engage with Polisario Front leaders.
During his meeting with Bourita, De Mistura reiterated Morocco’s “three no’s,” which the Kingdom views as essential for resolving the conflict.
