Professors at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy in Casablanca issued a strong statement today condemning the recent security crackdown on medical students, interns, and residents.
In an extraordinary general assembly held on Monday, the professors expressed their deep concern over the deteriorating situation and called for immediate action to resolve the crisis.
In the statement, issued by the National Union of Higher Education, the professors criticized the recent reforms to medical studies, which included reducing the study period and cutting one year of theoretical lessons.
The professors said that these changes were implemented in a non-participatory manner and without adequate consideration for the needs of students and faculty.
The professors also expressed dissatisfaction with the management of resit exam schedules, which they claimed were causing unnecessary stress and hardship for students.
The statement condemned the violent intervention against students, interns, and residents and rejected the use of security forces to address the crisis.
The professors called for the reinstatement of suspended students, the reversal of the dissolution of student offices, and an end to the security approach.
The professors also announced plans to organize a solidarity sit-in with their students and resident doctors on Wednesday at 11:00 AM at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy in Casablanca.
The statement called on the government to find an urgent solution to the current crisis and warned that if the situation continues, the professors may be unable to fulfill their pedagogical duties, including delivering lectures and ensuring the normal conduct of exams.
The statement comes in a context of significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between medical students and the authorities.
Thirty-four healthcare professionals, including 24 medical students and 10 residents and interns, have been charged by the public prosecutor following their arrest during a protest at Rabat’s Ibn Sina University Hospital.
The individuals were detained during a demonstration organized by the National Committee of Residents and Interns but were later released. The protest was met with a forceful response from public authorities.
The charges against them include unauthorized assembly, disobedience, and failure to comply with authority orders.
