The Pentagon has approved the sale of 40 AGM-154C Joint Standoff Weapons (JSOW) missiles to Morocco, a key non-NATO ally, in a deal valued at $250 million. The approval, announced by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), includes not only advanced munitions but also comprehensive training systems and logistical support aimed at enhancing Morocco’s national defense capabilities.
The sale was officially published in the Federal Register on September 11. The DSCA oversees military and technical assistance to partner countries, and this deal represents a significant upgrade for Morocco’s military capabilities.
The AGM-154C missile, manufactured by Raytheon, is among the world’s most advanced glide bomb systems. It allows air forces to strike protected targets with high accuracy, day or night, and in adverse weather conditions. Equipped with a multi-stage warhead and a high-precision GPS positioning system, the AGM-154C offers considerable strike power.
In terms of range, the missile can hit targets approximately 22 kilometers away when launched from low altitudes, and over 120 kilometers from high altitudes. This capability enables military operations to engage targets while maintaining a safe distance from enemy defenses.
The DSCA stated that the primary goal of the sale is to support U.S. national security interests while bolstering the security of Morocco, which plays a vital role in protecting strategic maritime routes in the region. This acquisition marks a significant advancement for the Moroccan armed forces, allowing for the seamless integration of these new munitions into their operations.
With this deal, Morocco becomes the first African country to acquire precision missiles of this type, further strengthening its military position on both regional and international fronts.
